Community Programming

At GlobeMed, we know that we will not achieve global health equity without a strong movement and committed co-conspirators. If you believe that health is a human right, that systems of oppression need to be dismantled, and that people are the experts of their own experience, then you are a part of our community. We hosted a variety of programs that were open to all as a way for all of us to strengthen the global health equity movement. These programs remain available to all as recordings, to continue the global health equity movement.

Health Equity Speaker Series

From December 2020 to July 2022, we hosted a regular talk from someone in the movement from global health equity. We highlighted Black and oppressed people who have been systemically excluded from positions of leadership and expertise to showcase their areas of expertise and advice for building a strong movement, collectively. GlobeMed Talk

Recognizing all the different ways that stories can, and should, be told, we interviewed students and alumni from the GlobeMed network. Through these interviews and storytelling sessions, you’ll learn how the GlobeMed experience influenced their path and commitment to the global health equity movement.

**Health Equity Speaker Series: Advocating for Equitable Health Policies**
The Right to Health Action team discusses their work around health equity and leveraging the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the human right to health and a safe environment is accessible to everyone everywhere. Yesnely Flores explores the effects of social and cultural factors regarding intergenerational trauma amongst mixed status Latinx youth. Additionally, she will dives into the intricate details regarding structural policy impact on mixed status Latinx youth while seeking to understand implications for future policy. **Health Equity Speaker Series: Measuring Impact with the Community**
Jean Claude Mugunga is a former partner and board member of GlobeMed. He now works at Partners in Health and has extensive experience in measuring and evaluating the impact of interventions in ways that honor and involve the community that is affected. **Health Equity Speaker Series: Rethinking Gun Violence with Olivia Gonzalez, RN, BSN**
Olivia Gonzalez, RN, BSN (she/her) works as a trauma nurse. Her first day on the job, one of her patients was a gunshot victim. Nearly every day after that, she had another gunshot victim to treat, leading her to question what was happening. She joined up with 414Life Milwaukee, who takes a public health approach to gun violence and its prevention. Watch the recording of Olivia as she talks about her work in this area.

**Health Equity Speaker Series: Creating Safer Spaces with Raneem Salem**
Raneem Salem (he/him) is one of the founders of Girls Rock Cincinnati and in that work, he works with young people to create safer spaces. **Health Equity Speaker Series: DIY Tent-Safe Heaters Workshop**
It's the middle of winter and many neighbors and community members are living in tents and outside. As climate change brings colder weather to more places, here's a way for you to support your neighbors to stay warm. **Health Equity Speaker Series: (Un)Learning Practices that Undermine Inclusion and Belonging**
Despite an increased focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion across various sectors of society including public health, business, and education, there continues to be confusion about how to engage in this work effectively or without perpetuating further harm. **Health Equity Speaker Series: Ugo Okere of Raise the Floor**
Ugo Okere leads us in a truly explorative conversation around all things political engagement. Ugo is a former aldermanic candidate and current policy director for the Raise The Floor Alliance in Chicago, a coalition of community organizations and labor unions fighting to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2021 for all workers. **Health Equity Speaker Series: Interview the Future, Reimagining Global Health**
Howard MD Candidates Latrice Johnson and Jonathan Willard share their journeys into medicine with a health equity lens. We discussed the importance of reimagining healthcare systems and roles, and also ask the question of who needs to be involved (with & beyond medicine) in the action stages of restorative health justice. **Health Equity Speaker Series: Reimagining Movements with Tristan Taylor**
As a part of our 2021 Leadership Institute, we reimagined what global health equity could look like. Part of that is recognizing that we are a part of a movement, and how can we reimagine this movement. **Health Equity Speaker Series: Pathways to Working in Public Health with Mother Lab**

**Health Equity Speaker Series: Consent & Black Maternal Care, A Conversation with Aaliyah Sade Murphy**
Aaliyah Sade Murphy is a recent graduate of the World, Arts and Cultures: Arts Activism and Global Health programs at University of California, Los Angeles. She is a full spectrum doula, certified international yoga instructor student herbalist and social justice rooted community based researcher.
